We thought maybe it was a rabid animal – we went out to investigate from the safety of our deck and shined a flashlight out into the darkness saw a pair of eyes shing/staring back at us…that’s all we could see in the dark. We were woken up at about 2:30 am this morning to a very loud eerie scream, repeating over and over, coming from the golf course behind our house (Cobbs Creek GC, in Philadelphia). Mating can last for up to 20 minutes during which the two animals effectively become ‘locked together’. ![]() To our ears it can sound like a painful call, particularly as foxes breed in the same way that dogs do. The females also make this screaming call around the time of and during mating. Screams are used to confirm territory between rival foxes. It is a sound that can be heard throughout the year and, although made by both sexes, is usually made by the female fox, otherwise known as the Vixen.įoxes make various noises for different reasons, but the scream is usually made around the breeding season.
